History of KKESH

King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital serves as a cornerstone of modern healthcare in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, reflecting the visionary leadership of King Khaled bin Abdulaziz, may Allah have mercy on him. His royal vision was to establish a center for specialized eye care for the citizens of the nation. Since its inception, the hospital has evolved beyond mere treatment; it has become a leading hub for scientific research and innovation in ophthalmology, achieving significant milestones that showcase its commitment to excellence.
In the late 1970s, King Khaled recognized the challenges faced by Saudi citizens in seeking medical and surgical treatment for eye conditions abroad. This awareness highlighted the urgent need for a comprehensive medical center focused on eye care and research. To address this, King Khaled and his council proposed the establishment of a specialized eye hospital to serve the Middle East region. In August 1979, a royal decree established King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, which has since gained recognition as one of the premier eye hospitals in the world. The government generously allocated a 2.5-square-kilometer site on the northwestern border of Riyadh for this ambitious project. King Khaled closely supervised the construction of the hospital, with the first phase completed by June 1981. This initial phase included the majority of the hospital’s departments, a mosque, 22 residential villas, six five-story buildings, a community service center, and tennis courts. The second phase concluded in late 1982, finalizing the remaining departments, access roads, and landscaping. The hospital officially began operations in December 1982, although King Khaled passed away shortly before its completion. It was inaugurated by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in November 1983.
Since opening, the hospital has embraced cutting-edge technologies in ophthalmology, establishing itself as a leader in advanced procedures such as LASIK and lens implantation. It has also earned a strong reputation in research, actively participating in global studies that foster the development of new treatments and improve patient outcomes, thereby playing a pivotal role in advancing medical knowledge. The hospital extends its influence into the community through health awareness initiatives, offering free eye screenings and educational programs to promote the importance of eye health. Additionally, it is committed to supporting low-income families, reflecting its dedication to enhancing the overall quality of life. Looking ahead, King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital plans to expand its services with a focus on healthcare innovation. Future initiatives include developing comprehensive training programs for healthcare professionals and advancing research in emerging areas, reinforcing its commitment to excellence in ophthalmology.
King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital stands as a symbol of pride and an embodiment of the pursuit of the highest standards in healthcare. With its unwavering dedication to continuous improvement and innovation, the hospital is well-positioned to tackle future challenges in ophthalmology, enhance scientific research, and support community initiatives, solidifying its reputation as a beacon of excellence in the region and continuing the noble royal vision for better health for all.
